Building Your Child's Oral Language

Updated: Oct 8, 2024

šŸ—£ Oral language is used to express our knowledge, ideas, and feelings. When your child is able to express their oral language, they are able to grow as a learner! šŸ—£

1. Read to them Often

šŸ“š Reading to your little ones does so much more than you would think! šŸ“–You are teaching them print awareness. šŸ“– This means you are introducing the gift of reading by showing them how to hold a book and flip through pages correctly. šŸ‘‰šŸ»Try pointing to the words as you read them aloud. šŸ‘‰šŸ» This helps teach them that we read words on a page from left to right.

šŸ“š Ask your child questions as you read.

ā€¢ā€What do you think is happening in the story?ā€

ā€¢ā€Can you show me something you notice on the page?ā€

ā€¢ā€What do you think will happen next?ā€

Even if they can’t answer the question, ask them anyways! Provide them with the answers ā€œwell I think...ā€

2. Allow them to express themselves

🌱 Create experiences for your little one to remember. Set aside a time in the day that is devoted to experiencing something new with them and allowing them to ask all the questions.

🌷Gardening

šŸš¶šŸ½Taking a walk

šŸ› Look for bugs, leaves, sticks •touching these objects also helps with sensory learning•

🌱 Getting outside and having real life experiences will help children develop their sense of wonder and ability to express themselves orally.

3. Use patterned books, rhymes, and poems

šŸŽ¼ There’s a purpose for those old fashion nursery rhymes! Rhymes help build phonemic awareness.

āœļø Phonemic awareness is a child’s ability to notice the patterns between words that they read. āœļø Building your child’s phonemic awareness is so important for them to develop as a reader and learner.

/b/ /a/ /t/ = 3 sounds

āœļø Teach your little learner to break up words into their sounds. Then try to have them manipulate the sounds in the word. You can ask them ā€œWhat rhymes with bat?ā€ Or ā€œWhat happens if I change the /b/ in bat to a /p/?ā€

Don’t get frustrated if your little learner gets stuck. The purpose is exposure. Keep up the hard work!
