In my previous post, "Rebranding TikTok Tradwives," I explored the idea of the Modern Tradwife—someone who holds traditional values of homesteading in a modern society, enjoys taking care of their family's needs, and isn't afraid to admit they need help. Since then, I've delved deeper into the ongoing conversation around tradwives and wanted to share some further thoughts.
Addressing Criticisms and Stereotypes
A significant portion of the criticism against tradwives revolves around the belief that they are inherently racially insensitive. Critics point to the predominantly white, often Christian or Mormon background of many tradwives. This assumption is troubling and requires closer examination. What specific evidence supports this claim? Are we to believe that anyone who aligns with these faiths or traditions holds these values? This broad generalization seems unfounded and unfair.
Tradwives and Modern Feminism
Another major critique is that tradwives are dismantling modern feminism by embracing traditional gender roles. However, this perspective overlooks the fundamental principle of feminism: choice. The decision to be a homemaker doesn't necessarily equate to a political stance against feminism. It could simply be a personal preference. By rebranding the term 'tradwife' to be more inclusive, we might shift the narrative to one of acceptance and personal freedom.
The Reality of Tradwife Content
There's a valid point made by critics about the portrayal of tradwives, especially the '1950s housewife' aesthetic that can be misleading and unrealistic. This portrayal may give young women the wrong impression of what being a tradwife entails. However, enjoying domestic hobbies and being a homemaker shouldn't be mixed with pushing traditional gender roles or a political agenda. My experience as a former home economics teacher has shown me the importance of these skills for everyone, regardless of gender.
Personal Choice and Values
Ultimately, the role of a tradwife or the enjoyment of domestic life doesn't need to be seen as a political statement. It's about personal choice and values. In our modern society, there's room for diverse lifestyles and choices. We can respect and understand different perspectives without resorting to unfounded generalizations.
I invite you all to share your thoughts and join the discussion. Let's strive for respectful dialogue and a deeper understanding of each other's choices. After all, it's not that deep.
XO, Ashley
